Article VI. Committees

Section A. Academic and Student Affairs

The Academic and Student Affairs Chairperson shall:

  1. Report to the President and Vice-President.
  2. Actively communicate concerning issues of black student academic progress and concerns to the respective offices or administrators.
  3. Serve as a link between Black Student Alliance and Career Services, George Mason University‘s Academic Affairs Office, Office of Admissions, the Department of African-American Studies and any other office or organization relevant to Academic and Student Affairs.
  4. Monitor the recruitment and retention patterns and report it to the Executive Board.
  5. Make sure any announcements or information given by the Academic and Student Affairs committee is posted on the website and/or given to the General Body.
  6. Appoint, if necessary, a co-chair.
The Academic and Student Affairs Committee shall:
  1. Report to the Academic and Student Affairs Chairperson.
  2. Propose and implement academically related programs and resources (i.e. career counseling, minority job fairs) for minority students, in accordance with the chair and co-chair of the Academic and Student Affairs committee.
  3. Sponsor and arrange major speakers.
  4. Keep records of scholarships, job opportunities, and academic opportunities; make BSA aware of these records at meetings and on the website.
  5. Influence academic policies relevant to Black students, administration and faculty.
  6. Have a representative to serve as the liaison to the Student Senate.
Section B. History Committee

The History Chairperson shall:
  1. Report to President and Vice President.
  2. Make sure Black Student Alliance history information is updated on the website and all other locations.
  3. Serve as the Historian for the Black Student Alliance.
  4. Be responsible for compiling historical records of events for the year.
  5. Keep an accurate book of photos and descriptions of events with Black Student Alliance and events with other organizations relevant to student life at George Mason University.
  6. Appoint, if necessary a co-chair.
The History Committee shall:
  1. Report to the History chairperson.
  2. Document all Black Student Alliance events and other events relevant to the student life at George Mason; present the collection (photo albums, video tapes etc.) to the Executive Board and the General Body when necessary.
  3. Update Black Student Alliance history on the website and other locations.
  4. Maintain Black Student Alliance officer archive.
  5. Plan Black History Month celebrations sponsored by the Black Student Alliance in consultation with the President, Vice President and Advisor.
Section C. Outreach and Public Affairs Committee

The Outreach and Public Affairs Chairperson shall:
  1. Report to the President and Vice-President.
  2. Maintain an updated list of cultural, NPHC and other relevant organization leaders.
  3. Establish links with the community through public service activities.
  4. Make sure activities/announcements by the committee are posted on the website.
  5. Appoint, if necessary, a co-chair.
The Outreach and Public Affairs Committee shall:
  1. Report to the Outreach and Public Affairs Committee Chairperson.
  2. Coordinate service projects for participation by the General Body.
  3. Have a current list of possible community service activities.
  4. Establish links with campus political organizations and the local and state political parties.
  5. Educate students about the George Mason University, Fairfax and the national elections.
  6. Plan voter registration drives when needed.
  7. Monitor and take actions on events that are of concern to George Mason’s Black students and the African-American society worldwide.
  8. Organize events that can help promote leadership development within the General Body.
Section D. The Fundraising and Financial Affairs Committee

The Fundraising and Financial Affairs Committee Chairperson shall:
  1. Be the Treasurer of the Black Student Alliance – see Treasurer Duties
  2. Appoint, if necessary, a co-chair
The Fundraising and Financial Affairs Committee shall:
  1. Report to the Fundraising and Financial Affairs Committee chair or Co-Chair.
  2. Organize and initiate all activities and events that will increase the Black Student Alliance’s proceeds.
  3. Have a representative to each Black Student Alliance committee to advise and assist with the preparation of an event.
  4. Help all committees meet their fundraising goals.
Section E. Publications and Social Committee

The Publications and Social Chairperson shall:
  1. Report to the President and Vice-President.
  2. Be responsible for posting flyers and any other form of communication necessary that informs the George Mason community of events, meetings, etc.
  3. Be the chief organizer responsible for keeping the public aware of Black Student Alliance events, meetings, etc.
  4. Have communication between various George Mason offices to remain informed of events.
  5. Assist the Webmaster with the Black Student Alliance website when necessary.
  6. Make sure that all committees have any information that needs to be placed on the website turned in by the deadline set by the committee and Webmaster.
  7. Appoint, if necessary, a co-chair.
The Publications and Social Committee shall:
  1. Report to the Publications and Social committee Chairperson.
  2. Produce a newsletter at least twice a semester; the purpose is to inform the campus of past and upcoming events, as well as issues that may concern the George Mason community.
  3. Have a monthly calendar available, for the Webmaster to place on the website, of all BSA sponsored events, as well as other events that may be of interest to George Mason’s Black community.
  4. Set a deadline for information that needs to be placed on the website, in accordance with the Webmaster.
  5. Plan activities centered around Black students at George Mason to enhance their experience at George Mason.
