GMU Telecom Society Fall Event Presenter Biographies

Dr. Mark Aakhus
Professor of Communication
Rutgers University


Dr. Aakhus is assistant professor of communication at Rutgers University. His research interests are in human problem solving and decision making. He investigates how new media and communication formats are designed and implemented to improve communication. Within this domain, Aakhus is especially interested in how such innovations affect the quality of human activities in areas of learning, organizing, decision-making, and conflict management.

Dr. Aakhus has published in technology and communication journals. He is a co-editor of the forthcoming book "Perpetual Contact: Mobile Communication, Private Talk, Public Performance" at the Cambridge University Press. His work appears regularly in international publications on argumentation and disputing processes.

Dr. Aakhus is past co-chair of the National Communication Association's Human Communication and Technology Commission. He is a dispute-mediator and has invented a distributed learning application for educating professionals.

Dr. Aakhus earned his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona in Communication, with a specialization in Management Information Systems.

Dr. T. Andrew Finn
Associate Professor, Department of Communication
George Mason University


Dr. T. Andrew Finn is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University, where he teaches courses in human communication, new technologies, and telecommunications.

Dr. Finn's research interests center on how electronic communication and information technologies change the nature of human communication. His most recent studies have examined how people use caller ID, cell phones, and instant messaging.

Prior to joining George Mason he taught full-time at the University of Kentucky and part-time at Rutgers University, New York University, and Washington University in St. Louis. During much of that time he was at AT&T, working on new technologies from a variety of perspectives, including user interface and system design, technology implementation and training, and product management and marketing.

Dr. Finn earned his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.

Ms. Dee Yankoskie
Manager of Wireless Education Programs
Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA)


Dee Yankoskie is Manager of Wireless Education Programs for the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA). In this capacity, she deals with safety issues facing the wireless industry, specifically, safe driving. Ms. Yankoskie works proactively to educate the public on the responsible use of wireless phones while driving through CTIA's educational campaign, "Safety - Your Most Important Call," while also communicating the enormous benefits that wireless phones provide to highway safety. Her main focus is outreach to community leaders, elected officials and consumers through mainstream media outlets.

Prior to joining CTIA's media relations' team, Ms. Yankoskie was part of the research staff where she gained extensive expertise on policy issues facing the wireless industry including Calling Party Pays and E911.

Ms. Yankoskie graduated with honors from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Legal Studies. Currently, she resides in Silver Spring, MD.

Mr. Ian Rodway
Assistant Commonwealth Attorney
Fairfax County


Ian Rodway is presently an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Fairfax County; he has been in this position for the past 6 years.

Prior to joining Fairfax County, he was an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney from 1968-1972. In addition, he was also part of a private law practice, concentrating primarily on criminal defense work.
