Images of George Mason Hillel's
Israel 2000 Experience -- January 3-14, 2000

at the airport Full-Strength Jewishness
From January 3-14, nineteen George Mason University students participated in Israel 2000, a once in a lifetime trip to Israel at no cost through a program called Birthright Israel. Sponsored by Jewish philanthropists Michael Steinhart and Charles Bronfman, along with the Israeli government, Birthright Israel sent nearly 6000 Jewish college students from around the world to Israel to experience their people's homeland for the first time. GMU's group, along with twenty students from the American University, traveled together through the Holy Land and in the process, learned more about their people, their culture, and themselves.

The 3,000 students who participated in Hillel's Israel 2000 trip, 19 from GMU, got a taste of 100-percent concentrated, undiluted, full-strength, high-octane Jewishness. For ten days they ate Jewish, drank Jewish, walked Jewish, talked Jewish, learned Jewish, sang Jewish, danced Jewish. The streets had Jewish names. The guy walking down the street resembled Uncle Bernie or cousin Jason. The cute soldier buying sunflower seeds was definitely date-able -- and no one on either side of the family would object.
