This program of study is offered by the College of Science .
Students must fulfill all requirements for bachelor’s degrees , including university general education requirements . Students majoring in biology must complete additional college requirements for the BA degree in COS.
Students must complete the requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.00 in the 32 credits of BIOL courses and a minimum GPA of 2.00 in the supporting courses listed below.
Additionally:
- Students may apply no more than 4 credits of or toward elective credit (or equivalent transfer credit at the 100-200 level) if taken before successful completion of .
- Biology majors must earn a minimum grade of C in all biology core courses listed below. A grade of C or better must be earned in BIOL 213 in order to advance to other core requirements.
- Students may repeat once and a second time only with permission of the Biology Undergraduate Program.
- Students may not count and/or toward any Biology major requirement.
- Students who take may not count and/or toward any Biology major requirement.
- meets the writing intensive requirement for this major.
Through the course work below, biology majors satisfy the university-wide requirements in natural science, quantitative reasoning, and information technology proficiency. |
Biology core courses (22 credits)
All candidates for the BA in biology, whether pursuing the degree without concentration or with the concentration in biology education, must complete biology core courses as follows: BA without Concentration
In addition to the 22 credits of biology core courses, students pursuing the BA in biology without concentration complete 30-31 credits as follows: 10 credits of biology electives
- 10 credits of additional biology courses of which at least six credits must be upper division. One of these upper division courses must include a laboratory.
3-4 credits of math chosen from:
3 credits of computer science
▲ Concentration in Biology Education (with Licensure) (BIED)
The education concentration consists of a selection of courses that provide essential skills to students who wish to pursue a career teaching high school biology. The concentration allows students to receive a license to teach biology in Virginia secondary schools within 120 credits.
Students majoring in biology with a concentration in biology education must complete 31-33 credits and additional course work required for licensure in Virginia. In doing so, students satisfy the university-wide general education requirements in natural science, quantitative reasoning, and information technology proficiency.
In addition to 22 credits of biology core courses, students take the following:
8 credits of anatomy and physiology courses
3 credits of biology elective
- One additional biology course as elective
3-4 credits of math chosen from:
3 credits of computer science
6-7 additional credits chosen from:
