Administration

James Goodlett McDaniel, Associate Provost for Distance Education

Distance education provides students with the opportunity to take the same classes offered on campus through different delivery methods. Many distance education courses may be completed at home, while stationed abroad, or when traveling.  Assignments, testing, and group work are conducted online and are designed to help you meet educational outcomes. Communication with the instructor and classmates is usually electronic via email or online discussion forums.

A list of degree programs and certificates that can be completed by taking the required courses fully online can be viewed on the Program page masononline.gmu.edu/programs/. If a program is not listed, this means that not all of the courses required to complete the program are offered in an online format.

To see a full list of online courses, visit MasonOnline’s Courses page.

Inquiries about distance education may be addressed to distance@gmu.edu.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Mason does not presently award credit for any massive open online course (MOOC). However, the university is evaluating a pilot arrangement consisting of a free short Mason MOOC (equivalent to one-third of the work in a three-credit course) to serve as a gateway to a credit-bearing course. In this pilot, demonstrated mastery of the material covered in the MOOC may be used in substitution for the work in the first one-third of the credit-bearing course. Grades will be determined by performance in the credit-bearing course component of the pilot. No credit will be awarded solely for the MOOC.
