We are all here first and foremost to learn. It is through what we learn now that will help us reach success after College. With this in mind, the primary purpose of the fraternity system if to encourage and help develop high scholastic achievements among its members.

Did you know that only about 50% of students in universities end up graduating? If you belong to a fraternity, however, your chances of graduating increase to over 70%!

This is no mere coincidence. Fraternity members help each other to succeed. Phi Kappa Sigma is no exception. We believe that school should be your number one priority. After all, your primary reason for being at Mason is to get a degree.

To promote good scholarship we hold weekly study halls for our New Members where upper-class members will be on hand to assist their studies. Members can also take advantage of our extensive scholastic file to better prepare them for a specific instructor's exams.

Furthermore, members who have attained junior or senior status are eligible to receive a scholarship from the Phi Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation. Last year 30 Phi Kaps across the nation received a $2500 scholarship!

Usually, the only way a person gets involved in a philanthropic event, is to do it with a group of people. On your resume, you need volunteer experience. The fraternity is an excellent way for you to donate your time for a good cause.

We have a special officer dedicated to finding new and interesting ways to help out the community. This is our opportunity to make a positive contribution to George Mason University and the County of Fairfax.

Our National philanthropy is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.  The organization remains true to its mission of fighting blood-related cancers, which include leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Our National community service is Habitat for Humanity.  Habitat is a Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing.  Habitat has built over 200,000 houses that have benefitted more than one million people.

Also, our chapter participates in Adopt-A-Highway. Our highway is located in nearby Clifton, VA. Adopt-A-Highway volunteers clean more than 13,000 miles of highways annually. That's about one-quarter of Virginia’s state-maintained roads. Volunteers provide the equivalent of roughly $3 million a year in litter-control services to the state.  We go out to our highway and clean it up for the community twice each semester.

In the fraternity, you will be "in charge" of an event or a duty. Everyone in the fraternity is a leader, whether you're an officer, on a committee, or just a participant. You will learn by doing. You'll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, motivate others; skills that will help you in college and throughout your life. These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job. It takes leadership experience.

Even as a New Member you will have the opportunity to take a leadership position in your New Member class. Once you are initiated you are immediately eligible to run for an office in the fraternity.

The concept of Brotherhood may seem abstract to non-Greeks. However, when you join a fraternity it becomes very real. One way to try and conceptualize our organization is like a family. College can be a challenging place and we are here to help each other through the journey. In our family we cheer each other on when we’re successful and support each other when the going gets tough. Becoming a brother of Phi Kappa Sigma means that you become a part of over 150 years of excellence.

After working on papers and studying for exams, we realize that a well rounded college experience includes some fun! Furthermore, we regularly hold Brotherhood events where we get together and have dinner or go bowling. This gives us a chance to strengthen our bonds and foster life-long relationships. Other events that we participate in include Intramural Sports, Alumni events, and our annual Black & Gold Formal.

In todays job market it’s increasingly about who you know instead of what you know. You can’t just pick up a paper, look through the wanted ads, and find a job anymore. As a brother of Phi Kappa Sigma, you have access to a large network of alumni, alumni that are now managers and department heads who can offer advice on where to look; perhaps there’s even an opening in their company that you would be perfect for. Not only do you have access to Alumni of our chapter, but to any Alumni member of Phi Kappa Sigma. Being brothers of Phi Kappa Sigma is a sacred connection that we as brothers take very seriously.

Now assume you're planning a trip to another city in North America. You need a place to stay, but you don't want to spend too much money. Membership in Phi Kappa Sigma allows you to travel to other fellow chapter houses to meet brothers and have a place to stay for free! We have a chapter in almost every major city in the U.S. and one in Toronto, Canada.

We try to visit at least one other chapter every year. It’s common for one chapter to get a bunch of guys together and plan a road trip, staying at several chapters along the way. When you arrive, although you may have never met these brothers before, you have a fraternal bond. You're more than just a guest in their home; you're brothers and share an instant friendship. All this mushy brotherhood stuff may be hard to believe at first, but it’s genuine and held in the highest regard.
