Page One A few bad eggs are ruining the
Quality of Life in our Republic, and we need to get fixed on fixing their wagon.
We’re talking about the noise polluters, mainly vehicle noise pollution. The Commonwealth of Virginia,
the great Old Dominion, should lead the way. When we all go in to get our
SMOG Sticker inspection, most of us have no problem at all. Being a law-abiding
people we keep our cars in pretty good condition. But there are always a few
Pollution Scofflaws, and thank God we have a way to deal with them. However, we are forgetting one
thing: Perhaps the worst polluters of them all, are those whose vehicles put
out LOUD NOISE that tens of thousands of others of us are forced to listen
to. We are all for as much freedom as possible, but we also realize that
everyone’s freedom must stop where the other guy’s nose begins. |
You can’t have a stinking hog pen
next to your neighbors house, or a stinking tail pipe, and rightfully so, but
you can under present law run up and down in front of your neighbor’s house
with a loud muffler on your car, and for the most part that neighbor can’t do
anything about it, except shoot you, which would get him in even more
trouble. We are taught not to take the
law into our own hands but to seek a redress of grievances through the
political process, and that is the way to do it. It is the very lawlessness of
these purveyors of noise that needs to be curbed. Many of the noisemakers in
vehicles are doing it on purpose in order to vent their sick anti-social
feeling and get revenge on society for alleged wrongs done to them. |
We all know the type who has the
load muffler. If he or she is not an actual criminal they are just a step
away from it. They Include a lot of men with big inferiority complexes, which
they try to fix by going down the road making a lot of noise. As if making
noise was a substitute for being a real man. What are obviously needed now
are noise standards for vehicles, ALL VEHICLES. And that includes the
unnecessarily noisy school bus and garbage truck as well. Don’t believe for a minute that
trucks and buses cannot be mufflered so they don’t make any more noise than a
car. It is a blatant lie to say they can’t be. But, it is a lie that is
motivated by greed for money. It is a fact that a vehicle, with a muffler
that doesn’t muffle much, saves a penny or two a mile on gas or diesel consumption,
and gets a horsepower or two more out of that engine. This is why racing cars
make so much noise. |

Page Two These little savings in gas and
horsepower are bought by subjecting the rest of us to ear deafening, health
damaging, Quality of Life reducing, NOISE POLLUTION. The cure is simple. 1. An
informed citizenry. 2. A call to action by some organization or
organizations. And, 3. A change in the law. The law that needs changing is
both a Virginia law and the Federal law pertaining to Noise Emissions. The proposed state law change would kick in when you go into get your car inspected. The inspectors would simply rev-up the engine to at least 3000 rpms and measure the amount of noise produced at a certain distance from the end of the tail pipe. If it exceeded the maximum amount you would be sent to get a muffler that would get you past the machine. |
This would be real simple for
most of us, for we drive cars that will not exceed these limits. These limits
can be progressively lowered as needed to help us get a quieter society, to
insure the health of our children, the longevity of our older and less well
Senior Citizens, and the enjoyment of an improved Quality of Life for the rest
of us. The appropriate Federal law
should be changed to require all newly manufactured vehicles to be as quiet
as possible. And this should definitely include motorcycles like Harley
Davidson. We have all heard these maniacs
on motorbikes brag how they break windowpanes when they roar past houses.
Some of them make the additional excuse that they need to be heard by other
vehicles to intimidate them from coming too close to them in traffic.
Whatever the reasons spurious or not, they need to be quieted down. Studies have shown all kinds of ill effects from excess noise. The Elderly, the infirm and babies and children are especially susceptible to the damaging effects of noise. |
We as a society are spending
billions on mental health treatment, much of it paid for by taxpayers and
businesses. Some part of this bill is traceable to Vehicular Noise run amuck,
which tips over people who have fragile psyches’ Vehicular noise reduces property
values, harms wildlife, and impedes children’s ability to learn. It can tip
unstable people over into violent and antisocial behavior. EVERYTHING IS NEGATIVE ABOUT
NOISE, and so let us resolve, as a society, to have less of it.

national problem, and help the unfortunate, by contributing to SNAP, an
organization specifically designed to get the word out and impel our
legislators to action on this issue. God is not pleased by all this noise,
and our patriotic national interest is not well served by excessive levels of
