Patriots Voice News Distance Learning
Distance Learning is long overdue and it was with great pleasure that I heard of high tech genius Michael Saylor’s plans to do some serious investing in this vital area of life. As CEO of MicroStrategy headquartered in Tysons Corner Greater Washington DC Metro Area, he has the wherewithal to make the breakthroughs required.
The breakthroughs are, and have been, hindered by the sheepish and dog in the manger set of mind in traditional academia. When the auto was invented, buggy manufacturers swore they would build them, when they were feasible. They never did. People and organizations that are part of a problem rarely are part of the solution of that problem.
The success of this initiative will depend on how far Mr. Saylor keeps the control of it, out of the hands of those who would, intentionally or unintentionally, do it in. The following is an open letter to Michael Saylor:
Dear Mr. Saylor,
Don’t let them do it. Don’t let the Academic Dons run this. Use them but don’t let them abuse you. They have scuttled every attempt to create real Distance Learning using the technology of firms like MicroStrategy that providence has given us. I want to offer my services to you to prevent this from happening.
I heard you speak at the Business Philanthropy Summit in Washington, and know of your Saylor Foundation. When you speak of thing like the “genius knowledge bank,” I think we must be hearing from Messiah. You and your friends, Steve Case of AOL, and such other gifts of God, are the hope of the world.
But I must caution about other people, however well they are intended, like the President of GW Dr. Trachtenberg. These types of persons were the gurus of 20th Century Education. What we are looking for is Third Millennium types. There are a few, very few, little spots of bright.
For example U. of Md. offers BA’s in a number of fields over the Internet already, though I haven’t had a chance to look into their quality. People like Joseph E. Robert Jr. an area philanthropist, CEO of J. E. Robert Cos, represent some of the cutting edge of what present day philanthropy ought to be. I want to help guide this new wave to its highest possible peak. We need it.
Sincerely Yours,
