NCLL TEAM PREVIEW
If you want to make a run, you first have to make a stop: and with that, George Mason pulled up out of its’ early season nosedive and created its’ own destiny to finishing ‘14 on a high note. After an initial conference victory, the Patriots then lost the next four of five and in a nod to the previous two seasons to erase the memories of five-game losing streak in ’12 and ’13 finished on a season-saving three game win streak to jolt the Mason faithful and capture a coveted spot in the Chesapeake Conference Championship with a solid 8-6 victory over conference foe St. Mary’s. No win was bigger though for the Patriots than the 7-6 OT thriller over Top 20 Christopher Newport that put GMU back on track and back into national tournament conversations. The new look Patriots will lean on junior stalwarts Collin Kohlasch and Dan Butcher, while senior Sean Gambrani takes charge of the midfield corps that includes newcomers Franciso Lam and Dexter Ang. Freshman attackmen Tyler Alexander and Nathan Brostoff will bring extra attention from opposing defenses. For his part, freshman Josh Wheeler will take the reign in goal while having transfers Casey Shannon (Seton Hill) and Joey Edison (Virginia Tech) add experience to the mix. If all goes according to plan, expect even more jolts on the Fairfax campus as the green and gold have what it takes and more than enough to counter any run with a run of its’ own. In the always competitive Chesapeake Conference, that would set up another run to the National Tournament and a date with destiny.
