Chemistry Club Minutes 1/16/09

Meeting Times for Spring Semester, 2008

Officer Meetings – will be at the Tutoring Center from 1800-2000

  • David will not be available for officer meetings, so Erica is expected to run the meetings.
  • Dates: Feb 4th, March 4th, April 1st, April 23rd

General Meetings

  • Every 1st Thursday of the month, from 1800 – 2000
  • Dates: Feb 5th, March 5th, April 2nd
  • Planned dates and tentative event announcements
  • Susan will book the General Meeting Rooms, ideally at Johnson center or Sub II
  • Galina will get the Pizza and Sodas
    • If need access to lab for Chemistry Club supplies, David, Tiffany, Mery, and Dr. Foster has the lab key.
  • Tiffany will put up flyers for both general meetings and interest flyers
    • Tiffany will e-mail Dr. Chuck, Dr. Beck, and Dr. Schreifels flyers for mass e-mail to biology and chemistry majors.
  • Veronique is expected to send a welcome week e-mail

 

EVENTS

Elections: Takes place on April 2nd

  • Susan will make ballots
  • Peoples interested in officers position HAS to attend the 4/1 officer meeting
  • Veronique will e-mail details to people unable to attend the 4/1 officer meeting

Inauguration Day of new officers – April 23rd

  • Will give them the money box key, locker keys in tutoring center, and “THE BOOK”
  • Explain the officer’s roles and other details in running the club

ACS Study Guides – will buy probably at most 100 books

End of Semester Party – May 1st

  • Erica and Susan will mainly run
    • Meet with Galina to talk about the food proposal
  • By February 4th, the food proposal should be ready
  • ASK MERY: to book rooms
      • Want 2 big rooms, or 1 room which will have projector and a place for the food reception
  • Need to get plates, cups, ice, soda
  • GALINA owes David money for the previous 2008 end of semester party purchases
  • Dr. Weatherspoon as the Vice Dept. Chair will organize the seminar schedule
    • Ideally, will expect 1 hour of awards, then 4 hours max for the reception / food
    • Estimation that seminar will be at 0800 (but likely 0900) and end at 1300.
    • Will then book reception rood for 1130, and have food ready at 1200, where reception should last until 1730.

Spring Break Magic Show March 9 – March 13

  • Will ask Dr. Pettigrew, Dr. Schreifels, Dr. Kort, Dr.Born, other professors to help with event
    • If professors agree, then ask schools if they want to participate, and then ask member volunteers.
  • E-mail 10 elementary schools closest to campus if interested; if not enough schools will respond, will then e-mail the next 10 closest elementary schools, etc.
    • Do NOT want to overschedule, want at least 5 schools for 1-2 shows, 1st come 1st served basis.
    • Requirements: Want max 150 kids per magic show, and need a sink at performance location
    • Will not do magic show events in two schools simultaneously
  • Ask Dr. Honeychuck for the liquid nitrogen needed for magic show
  • If need Chemical supplies, ask Dr. Kort a week in advance

ACS Membership – Formal Review and Active Membership

  • Need at least 5 GMU students to apply so Chem Club can be an active chapter
  • ACS Formal Review so Chem Club can remain officially a part of ACS
    • Tiffany will write the formal review packet needed.

Social/Fundraising Events (tentative)

  • Game Night at GMU for fundraising
    • Tiffany will contact the Physical club, other science clubs, and pre-health clubs for interest
  • Laser Tag
    • Possibly end of semester event (date pending) and a social event (February 6th)
      • Susan will help plan the laser tag event on February 6th
  • Field Day – ask Jen of Pre-Optometry about the event
  • Science Show – with Physics Club
    • Ask Physics Club to deal with the food money, since Chemistry Club dealt with the catering in last year’s science show
